Owen Preece is a photographer making work about groupthink, grief, and identity

Owen was born in Dallas, Texas where he lived with his family until moving to Oregon at the age of ten. His work is informed by the contrasting cultures he experienced while splitting his childhood between Texas and Oregon and through his experience navigating perception. In his documentary style images Owen works to understand his subjects and to capture human connection beyond the surface of the presented self. Owen uses photography to abstract complex environments as a means of personal growth and out of a wanting for calm. The idea of a “clean slate” is a driving aspect of Owen’s work. He is constantly searching to break down his images to only the most crucial elements; to look at an overwhelming scene, task, moment, and be able to parse out only what is important. Owen looks forward to learning new things about the world whenever he picks up a camera.
